About the event
The end of the Mardi Gras season is marked by Mardi Gras Day, also known as Fat Tuesday. This day is the culmination of the Carnival season and falls the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent in the Christian calendar. The date of Mardi Gras varies each year because it is based on the date of Easter, which is a movable feast. Fat Tuesday can occur as early as February 3rd or as late as March 9th.
After the revelry and celebrations of Mardi Gras Day, the season officially ends, and the period of Lent begins, lasting for 40 days (excluding Sundays) leading up to Easter. During Lent, many people observe fasting, reflection, and penance.
